Scenario :

If the engine is not overrevving, simply close the diesel supply valve from the tank, and the engine will stop after it runs out of diesel.
If the engine picks up speed and you think it will damage the engine, take off the air cleaner and smother it with a wood block, rubber, or a rag; just make sure that it is not sucked into the engine. Be careful, as the vacuum caused by the engine can damage or hurt your hands or skin.
Be prepared.
When you start an unknown engine for the first time, always make sure you loosen the air cleaner to get quick access in case the engine “runs away.”
Close the diesel feed; you can always open it when the engine starts and the revs are normal.
